Shopping a CPA… again.

I got a letter in the mail from the small-town accounting firm I used last year to do my taxes. I decided to use this firm after a local CPA raked me over the coals for $1300 to prepare my taxes. The small-town firm only charged half as much.

cpaAccording to the letter, my CPA, who was fluent in oil and gas taxes, unexpectedly had a massive heart attack and died. It could not have happened to a nicer guy. He was a very laid back, no frills, get it done efficiently, and oh, by the way, how is the family? You know the type.

The firm has offered to continue providing their services, only with someone else behind the calculator.

So I’m again stuck with a decision to make, do I stick with an unknown tax preparer, or do I shop yet another CPA?

I wouldn’t jump so fast. I would interview the person first. Typically, a CPA firm tends to hire those who are similar to the other CPAs so the new person might be similar to your other CPA.

It is sad to hear that your CPA had a massive heart attack. How old was he?

Good advice, Kirk, I think that’s the direction I’m heading. It’s tough to find a good CPA with oil and gas knowledge, so that will be a sticking point in my interview.

The guy was 52 years old and looked to be in very good health. Didn’t smoke and wasn’t over weight at all…
