Back in the saddle…
After a week of several evening service calls to get my at&t U-verse service straightened out, I am finally reconnected to the internet and rejoining the blogosphere.
Needless to say, my U-verse experience has been frustrating, but now that I’ve got the kinks worked out, it’s turned out to be a very impressive service.
Coax isn’t what it seems to be…
The tech came out Monday night and ran some tests coming out of the gateway unit, which is much like a modem of sorts and found that while the signal from the unit itself was good, the signal at each coax TV outlet wasn’t worth beans. There was something happening between the gateway and the outlets.
He ended up isolating the problem to the coax run from the gateway that feeds each of the three televisions. This means he’d have to run a new line of coax, which would not be easy.
At 10:30pm, I decided I’d kick the service techs out of the house for the night, as I didn’t want to stay up much longer, and my wife was ready to go to bed.
Tuesday evening came around and the same service tech showed up with a buddy to help run the new coax line.
After a little thought, I asked them why they couldn’t just move the gateway to a different location and run the signal on existing good coax. They thought that was a great idea, which ended up making a 6 hour job a three hour job.
Much Improved Picture
So when the techs left, the picture quality to all three televisions was sharp and clear, and the internet service, while slower than my Comcast service, is adequate for our needs.
This is my first experience with a DVR, and quite frankly I might be hooked. I can even log in from work over the internet and tell the DVR which programs I want to record. It’s really pretty cool.
So after two weeks of garbled pictures and intermittent internet service, I’m back up and running.
I would recommend U-verse to anyone so long as they’re prepared to deal with a few teething issues with the technology, however, as I’ve said before, at&t U-verse has some incredible customer service like none other I’ve seen before.
And they may just give your local cable company a run for their money!
