U-verse installation scheduled…
April 22nd, 2007 by Grant in: TechnologyAT&T’s new television service, U-verse is now available in my neighborhood, and after watching several U-verse signs get posted in neighbors yards, I decided to sign up.
U-verse is basically television over the internet. It’s a little more complicated than that, but I’ll leave the technology tidbits out for those less interested.
I chose to take the U200 package, which basically provides 200 television channels, plus digital music, for $74 per month. Also included in the package is the basic internet service.
However, if you chose the U300 package (which also includes Starz, Encore, and other movie channels) they give you the first two months of television service for free. So I’ll take them up on the offer, and then downgrade to the U200 service after the two month period. This is provided that the service is actually as good, if not better, than my Comcast service.
I’m not a big fan of being in the first group of guinea pigs to try out new technology, but I figure the price is right, I get more for my money, and if it doesn’t work out, I can always go back to Comcast.
Some additional features that I don’t get with Comcast:
- 3 digital set top boxes, one of which is a DVR
- The ability to program the DVR over the internet
- Digital music channels
U-verse isn’t everywhere just yet, and in the few cities that it does cater to, it’s being phased in neighborhood by neighborhood.
So keep an eye out for U-verse, especially if you’re stuck in a monopolistic-based city like I am.
My installation is scheduled for May 5th, and from what I understand, it’s a lengthy process. I’ll keep you posted as to how it goes.

I can’t believe how fast this AT&T tech is progressing. I’m looking to take the plunge and invest in the U300 package myself. I’m on Avaya IP Office phones right now, but the U-Verse is awesome and oh so tempting. If you get a chance I’d like to hear how it works for you.
