On AT&T vs. Comcast
April 11th, 2007 by Grant in: TechnologyI had a post a while back about how AT&T’s U-verse is coming to town, and is a welcome form of disintermediation to the likes of Comcast, of which has done nothing but raise cable and internet rates for the past couple years due, in part to a lack of competition.
Well, I’ve been following the U-verse movement both in my own neighborhood and on the internet through an on-line forum called uverseusers.com.
Needless to say, the U-verse service is in its infancy and there are a few current subscribers who are not happy with the service despite the lower cost and more product when compared to Comcast.
However, while it may not be the ideal competition, it is competition none the less.
So it was with a strange irony that I opened up my mailbox today and pulled out the Comcast bill just as an AT&T installation van drove by. It’s never a good day when the Comcast bill comes, but today I decided to call Comcast on their overpriced service.
As I have done before, I told Comcast that I wanted a lower rate or I wanted the plug pulled. I also slipped in the conversation that AT&T is in my neighborhood and offering a very attractive package for more channels and services than what I’m currently receiving with Comcast.
The conversation immediately turned to what Comcast could do to keep me as a customer.
“All I want is to keep my basic services for under $75 per month.”
Done deal. At least for the next six months. $73.43 per month, saving me $30 per month, or a total of $180 over the next 6 months.
I’m not ruling out making the switch to U-verse either, but from the feedback on uverseusers.com, there are growing pains to be had for TV over the internet.
