The Newer, The Heavier: Golden Dubya
February 12th, 2007 by Grant in: Banking, Economics, SavingDubya is made of Gold, and according to the U.S. treasury will have free reign of your bank accounts and finances. On top of that, you can’t stop him!
For those of you who have been politically stimulated by the opening sentence of this post, I have bad news. You’re thinking if the wrong Dubya.
I’m referring to the new “Golden” George Washington dollar coin that will hit circulation on Thursday. The first of a new series of dollar coins, George Washington will face the initial release, and much like the state quarters, the coins will take on a new face every 3 months or so, paying tribute to United States Presidents.
After hearing about this new venture, I had a stroke of de-ja-vu. Haven’t we been down this road before? Wasn’t Sacagawea a failure? (No, not the woman, the dollar coin!)
And what about the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin before that?
And the Eisenhower dollar?
And for you coin collectors, what about the “Peace” dollar produced up until 1935?
The treasury says it has no intentions of discontinuing the paper dollar bill, which again leaves me wondering… Why are we doing this… again?
For those who collect the coins, go to the bank on Thursday and get yourself a handful of Dollar Dubyas, and then be on the lookout for John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison through the rest of the year.
I personally like the dollar coins, as I’m in the habbit of emptying my pockets at the end of the day and collecting it in my 5 gallon water jug. Increasing the value of change increases the value of… my water jug.
So which do you prefer? Would you be disappointed if they did away with the paper dollar?

Well, on a personal level, I could care less if we went to coins for dollars. I lived in Germany for a couple of years and got used to Marks being coins.
As a business person who works at craft shows selling small cost items and ends up with a serious wad of ones at the end of the day… I’m not so happy with the idea of a coined dollar.
However, money is money, so I’m not going to complain overly much either way it ends up.
