Need a Cheap Computer?
January 27th, 2007 by Grant in: Frugal Living, TechnologyI was in Best Buy this afternoon looking to upgrade my Norton Internet Security program to a newer version.
After checking out the latest in big screens, I strolled over to the computer section. For the women out there, regardless of why us guys go to Best Buy in the first place, checking in at the television and computer department is a requirement for every trip. Gotta keep up with the latest and greatest you know, even if it’s only for informative purposes only…
I digress.
So I stroll over to the computer department, and low and behold, they don’t have a single computer on display. Not one.
Shocked, I had to find out if Best Buy is getting out of the computer sales business.
Story goes, since Windows Vista is making its debut this Tuesday, they sold all of their computers (desktops and laptops) on clearance. You heard right, all of them. I couldn’t buy a computer today if I had to! This is according to the sales rep. I talked to, who, by nature tried to sell me a computer they didn’t even have…
Anyway, if you’re in need of a new computer, now is the time to buy, since lets face it, Windows XP is old news! Another great example of how shopping a generation behind will save you money.

Cool! Saw this post on the Fox News site.
Wish I would have known about this XP fire sale a couple weeks ago.

Thanks, tom!
Look around, you might still be able to find an XP machine around somewhere… If you do, you’ll no doubt be able to get a great deal!

Norton is terrible “bloatware” and for what you get is a hugh waste of money..

I agree, Andy. Norton has suffered from a huge case of “feature creep” in the last few years (for those who are not computer savy, this translates into many more resources required to run the program).
Their “auto protect” feature essentially scans every single file each time it’s accessed. Seems like overkill to me and I turn that “feature” off, which keeps my computer from slowing down significantly.
That said, I’ve never had a “security” problem with Norton, and I prefer Internet Security over McAfee.
Do you have any recommendations for some good security software?
Thanks for the thoughts.

I don’t think Norton is that “bloaty”, as Andy said. I like the program and am happy with the updates they’ve made in the ‘07 release.
There does seem to be a lot of extraneous stuff running in the background but I havnt seen a degredation in speed as of yet. But I do have a newer computer.
Compared to Norton, Macafee seems archaic.
