Christmas is here (already).
November 5th, 2006 by Grant in: EconomicsIt seems like every year retailers whip out the Christmas decorations a few days earlier than the year before.
Home Depot has their Christmas stuff out already, and the just as the clock chimed 8:00am the day after Halloween, the local radio station started their 24/7 Christmas music. The DAY AFTER HALLOWEEN!
Obviously retail is driving the holiday push; trying to get jump on the season and capitalize just that much more on consumer spending.
At some point in time (a timeframe that David Houle calls the “Tipping Point”) we’ll get to a point where holiday sales actually drop off the earlier the merchandise is on the shelves.
I don’t know when that time will be, but considering it’s not even winter yet, I find it hard to believe we’re seeing Christmas decor on the shelf.
Or maybe I’m just getting older…

oh that’s funny; you and I just blogged about Christmas (on the same day!). Yah, retailers are getting stuff on the shelves now pretty much right after Halloween.
However here’s the benefit, IMO: It gets you to start thinking about your Christmas purchases earlier in the season, hopefully leading to less implusive buying and hopefully also leading to being able to spread the purchases out over several paychecks, making it easier on the cash flow (and hopefully not being tempted to put any purchases on credit cards!)

That’s a good way to look at it, Finance Girl.
On the other hand, you may not be as likely to get any “good deals” shopping this early either.

Isn’t this sad? Retail has taken over what was a religous holiday.
